n the outskirts of Samarkand, on Afrasiab hill, is a complex of mausoleums called Shahi Zinda which in Persian translated to “The Living King.” Amongst which is the Mausoleum of Kassam ibn Abbas who was a cousin of Prophet Muhammad. Legend says that Kusam Ibn Abbas came to Samarkand to preach Islam but was beheaded, and a visit to the mausoleum is equated to a visit to the Mecca.

On the outskirts of Samarkand, on Afrasiab hill, is a complex of mausoleums called Shahi Zinda which in Persian translated to “The Living King.” Amongst which is the Mausoleum of Kassam ibn Abbas who was a cousin of Prophet Muhammad. Legend says that Kusam Ibn Abbas came to Samarkand to preach Islam but was beheaded, and a visit to the mausoleum is equated to a visit to the Mecca. Shahi Zinda complex was built during 9 th to 14th centuries. An extant complex consisting of eleven mausoleums is attached to each other in a series. The mausoleums are also included in the UNESCO list of protected site. The oldest buildings of the ensembledateback to XI-XII centuries. The distinctive blue domes with a mosaic finish portray a graceful look.
